Lord Howell of Guildford, George Osborne’s father-in-law has warned that the Conservatives will lose thousands of votes if fracking goes ahead in the Tory heartlands of southern England and the home counties instead of the “derelict” north, where Labour dominates.
The energy company leading efforts to exploit Britain’s shale gas reserves has threatened to pull out unless the law is changed to allow it to drill under people’s homes without their permission.

“Common sense prevailed! The Vale of Glamorgan planning committee unanimously rejected the planning application that we have been campaigning against for 7 months!
We have won the battle, but we haven’t won the war. There is still a lot to do, but this is a fantastic result.
Thanks to everyone who has supported this campaign so far. It’s taken a lot of hard work, but it has certainly paid off for now.

Oil exploration group Pentex Oil UK claims the 100 million barrels found at Avington, near Winchester, is 30% larger than its biggest existing UK reserve, just 15 miles up the road in Stockbridge.
It says drilling will not have a big impact on the surrounding area, with just six people employed to extract the oil.
It was announced that the Chinese Modern Pentathlon Team have chosen to base themselves at Bishop Burton College in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
If the drilling goes ahead they will have a wonderful view of the oil drilling site – what a great example to set!
